Flexible Packaging Machine Selection Guide

Flexible packaging covers many films, bag styles and machine platforms. HFFS, VFFS and premade pouch equipment all create or handle flexible packs, but they solve different product-flow and presentation requirements. A useful specification begins with the product and final package rather than the phrase “flexible packaging machine.”

Three Main Machine Routes

• HFFS forms film horizontally around individual solid products and commonly produces pillow packs.
• VFFS forms film vertically and pairs with weighers, augers, cups or pumps for loose products.
• Premade pouch machines fill supplied bags such as zipper, stand-up, spout or shaped pouches.
• Shrink packaging uses different film behavior and should not be treated as form-fill-seal bagging.

Define the Flexible Package

• Bag style, dimensions, fill weight or product dimensions.
• Film or pouch structure, thickness, friction, barrier and heat-seal window.
• Printed registration, coding, easy-open, zipper, gusset and gas-flushing requirements.
• Shelf-life, transport and appearance acceptance criteria.

Avoiding the Wrong Machine Choice

• Do not select HFFS for free-flowing loose product without a suitable horizontal handling concept.
• Do not select VFFS for fragile oriented products that cannot tolerate vertical drop.
• Do not choose a premade pouch platform without considering pouch quality, opening reliability and supply cost.
• Always confirm the complete system with product and package samples.
